North Korea—activities seen at nuclear test site.

REUTERS—South Korean officials say they have sighted increased activity at North Korea’s only known nuclear test site, suggesting preparations for a nuclear test are underway, Reuters reports.

South Korean officials said activity is picking up at the Phunggye-ri site in North Hamgyong province.

The North Koreans last conducted a nuclear test at the site in October 2006, prompting U.N. trade and financial sanctions.

“Underground nuclear tests are hard to predict and you can’t tell when exactly a nuclear test would be possible, but we think the Northis ready to conduct a test in a near future if it wants to,” said a South Korean official in the Chosun Ilbo daily.

Last week Pyongyang threatened to conduct a nuclear test if the U.N. Security Council did not apologize and withdraw the sanctions thatwere tightened after an early April rocket launch.

The test site was so close to the previous one, that it could not escape the attention of US intelligence.
