“President Bush has emphasized that war is not inevitable, if Iraq fully cooperates. Even if Iraq does so, which is highly unlikely, IAEA has estimated that nuclear inspections would require at least a year to complete. The Administration has repeatedly warned against delay and may prove unwilling to see the process through. Winter is the preferred season for military operations in the Gulf, so the clock is ticking. Putting pressure on Saddam to cooperate is all to the good. Iraqs typical foot-dragging and dissembling must not be tolerated. But holding inspections hostage to an unrealistic timetable may preordain their failure and unduly risk war.”

This is particularly infuriating when some of my pre-war work on Iraq’s nuclear program is still cited today by right-wing bloggers as “proof” that Iraq had WMD prior to the US invasion…when in fact I was just saying that Saddam still had a lot of unresolved questions to which the IAEA should continue to seek answers.
