And yes they would have to fly through US-controlled airspace to get there. I can just hear it now- “I am shocked, Shocked! To find Israel attacked Iran!”
My read is that this allows Israel to run interference for the US and the streched state of our military. If we attack, we get all tangled up with another country to rebuild because we wouldn’t be able to keep it to one limited strike like Israel could. This way we could say, “Hey it wasn’t us” and we are potentially saved from quagmire.
